While I firmly believe that Hamlet is the greatest of Shakespeares's works, I believe that Othello is not far behind. True, it does not have the depth of character (except for Iago) or the great poetry, but it is still worthy. The reason that I hold Othello in such hig regard is the fact that this story is still relevant. Even 500 years after it was written, a person can turn on the news or news magazine television shows and find stories of a man or woman kiling their spouse because of manipulation by a third party. Yes, Othello is wrong to do what he did. Yes, it all could have been prevented if he had not listened to the fiend Iago. But without these flaws, Othello cannot be the tragic hero. Remember that the title of the play is "The Tragedy of Othello."
