This book is a rare jewel. It is indeed a story about a dog, but also a story about hiking in New Hampshire's White Mountains, about healing painful family relationships, and about discovering what one truly wants from life, all beautifully woven together with Tom Ryan's compassion, humor and skill as a writer. It is both a delight to read and an inspiration for thoughts about one's own life. And unlike so many books with animals as a central character, Atticus the miniature schnauzer is alive and well at the end! This is a book I will keep on my "classics" shelf and read again and again through the years.
