Hercule Poirot receives a letter from a rich British man living in France, requesting his help. Poirot and Hastings arrive and discover that their client, a Monsieur Renauld, has been murdered. A rude young detective named Giraud competes with Poirot to solve the crime, and Hastings is disappointed with Poirot's performance. At the same time, Hastings falls in love with a young lady he met on a train and shows off for her.

This is a very complicated mystery, and I don't recall any other Agatha Christie story being this involved and full of twists. I could be wrong; it's been a while since I've read her books.
