From the first page you know this story is not going to end well but you'll not put it down. The slow steady pace draws the reader along while the sense of foreboding amidst hope hangs like a cove shaded from the sun. The Appalachian location and details of mountain life are integral to the plot, though the human character is deeply universal. The language aids the sense of place without dialect. Rash has created a novel book clubs will love. No doubt there will be a movie.
