This book is definitely one of those first-in-a-series books that doesn't really answer any of questions it raises. It has the feel of the first act of a story with the second and third acts missing, which it is, but there are certainly other trilogies that manage to bring the first installment to a close nevertheless.

Anyway, I did find both the characters and the questions raised interesting enough to want to read the rest. As a lover of YA books, and time-travel, portals to other places and times, and the questions and paradoxes that come with these things, this is a suspenseful and confusing-in-a-good-way kind of story.
