it was amazing

A deceptively simple first-person narrative that turns out to be so much more than a typical prep-school coming of age story--and that packs a bit of a surprise ending. Dermont is a masterful storyteller. Her 17 year-old protagonist, Jason Prosper, scion of wealth and privilege, is a complex young man coming to terms with himself and his betrayal of a much-loved best friend. If he 'sounds' older than his years, it's with good reason--he has already experienced more of life in his short years than peers a decade or more older. The Starboard Sea is a memorable novel. I didn't want to finish it, so much was I enthralled with the story.
