This is a Cormier novel I've somehow missed. It has the usual Cormier bleakness and psychological tension, but it's easier to take than CHOCOLATE WAR or TENDERNESS. This novel is actually being used in a local high school, and it's provoked lots of energetic disucussion among the 10th grade students who are reading it.

It's a WWII novel featuring a boy---a Silver Star winner---who's returned home horribly disfigured; he's intent on killing a fellow townsman---and also a Silver Star winner---for a crime that took place a couple years earlier.

It's a short, fast read, and a good example of Cormier's prose.
