This is a wonderful story built on both plot and character. Ms. Collins does a superb job of pulling us into a bizarre (and, admittedly, gruesome) world and painting a picture that pulls us deeper and deeper into the story. She gives us just enough info about the heroine to make us empathize with her and at every turn want to know how she will react. I found real emotional connection with Katniss. I also think Ms. Collins provides a real lesson in how to set up a sequel, closing the may plot with a bang (although not particularly surprising--I can admit to having seen that coming from the selection of the two kids from District 9), but then giving the reader oodles of information and doubt about the future that will have many (including me!) ready to dive into the next book.

A side comment: I Read HUNGER GAMES after seeing the movie, something I rarely do. I must say that the movie rendition of the story is the truest adaptation of book to movie I can ever recall seeing.
