I might be persuaded to upgrade this rating, because the writing here is very easygoing and assured; Henkin definitely knows how to craft a novel. I just had the feeling that I've read this kind of story a dozen times before, and the use of present tense, while lending the story an added urgency, did sap some of the resonance out of it -- so much of the family tension seems drummed up and temporary. Or maybe I've just had my fill of these kinds of play-by-play novels.
