This is an astonishingly good book by Kiernan, who is hands-down one of the best writers of weird fiction, especially dark weird fiction, working today. I've always been more drawn to her short fiction than her novels, but this novel is a masterwork which achieves much of the same unease and ambiguity, wonder and dread, that I love in her shorter work. There is an enviable economy of prose, without any sacrifice to style, and the voice of Sarah Crowe is as commanding and engaging as the tale she is telling. Highly, highly recommended.
