Matt King plans to make his own way in the world. Descended from Hawaiian royalty, he and his cousins stand to gain tremendous wealth from the sale of their family lands. But Matt has separated himself from that money, lived off his own earnings and made a name for himself with a busy law practice.

Then life throws Matt a curve ball. Matt discovers his recently comatose wife will never wake again, his two daughters need him to be the father he's avoided being and his extended family insist he sell the family lands to cover debts. Oh, on top of that, his wife was having an affair. Despite his fear that his wife didn't really love him anymore, Matt King sets out to express the love he had for her. Taking his two daughters along and one daughter's odd boyfriend, Matt will cross the islands and a range of emotions in the course of 'The Descendants'. Along the way he'll find the man and father he was meant to be.

The Hawaiian history and setting add richness to a story of what it means to love and to care for one another. Funny, dramatic and compelling storytelling by author Kaui Hart Hemmings.
