I think I expected too much of this book after loving "Stasiland" so much. If I had read this first, I might have given it four stars.

Funder just seems better suited to writing non-fiction. Her powers of observation still shine through here, and her writing remains admirably succinct at times. But I felt her tone verged a bit towards the too serene and numb for a novel.

If you have any interest in mid-war Germany and the rise of Nazism, this book would be very compelling to you. It also does a nice job of switching between narrators and eras to unravel a tale of political intrigue and betrayal, if you're into that kind of thing.

I look forward to another effort from Funder, but hope she returns to non-fiction as well.
