When a chicken with emerald green feathers ends up on her doorstep, Shaina goes in search of its owner. She finds a damaged wooden crate on the street, and realizes that the chicken's owner, Izzy Pippik, must have lost her. Certain that he will return for the chicken, she refuses to allow anyone to harm the bird. Even when the bird lays an egg, she remains steadfast that the chicken and any offsprings belong to Izzy Pippik, who will return any day now. The egg hatches, and eventually, the town is overrun with chickens. When her neighbors want to eat the chickens, Shaina won't let them. Eventually, the town becomes known for all of its chickens, and by the time Izzy Pippik finally returns, no one wants to give up the birds that have brought good times back to the town. I thoroughly enjoyed this story because of Shaina's determination to do the right thing even when almost everyone tried to change her mind and because of the soft pencil and Photoshop colored illustrations.
