Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse

Rating: 3 Stars, i found some parts boring, I didn't like the style of writing

Summary: Out of the Dust is a book writen about the life of a 14 year old girl in the 1930s. The book is written in a journal/poem format. The poems take you through Billie Jo's life in poverty, hunger and longing for her mother through a difficult time in US history; The dust bowl. The family of farmers face the worst of the dust bowl in Oklahoma where tornadoes and drought has made life almost unbearable.

Conflict: Billie Jo and her family deal with issues of the great depression. Her relationship with her father is also a on going themem of the novel.

Characters: Billie Jo is Karen Hesse's 14 year old self in Oklahoma
