The story has unusual settings and characters, and is very well-written. I especially liked the sly humour of the sections about Kirsten, the King of Denmark's selfish consort. It kept me reading because of engagement with the characters and the ideas, but it didn't have a lot of drive in the plot, and perhaps for that reason felt a little over-long.
