I was pretty impressed with the first half of this book. Yes, in some ways it was a typical gritty Alaskan survival tale, but the writing really held my attention, and there was quite a bit of mystery. I liked the fuzziness of the line between reality and fairy tale. About halfway through, though, it lost me. It took on a real heaviness. The magic was pretty well gone. I felt I knew exactly where the story was now going, and it wasn't going to be nice, even though there were little teases of hope along the way. The author was clearly going for bittersweet, but to me it was far more bitter than sweet. Took me forever to finish because I kept picking up other things. Left me feeling depressed and bored.

I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if I could, but I'll be kind with 3, as there were promising things here. I will be curious to see what the author does next. I liked her writing style, and the build up. Unfortunately, the build up never amounted to much. At least not to much that I could enjoy.
