Fantastic! 540 pages of description of the spiritual state, and Chekhov be damned, it's amazing. Fantastic to be drawn so deeply into St. Petersburg of the 1860s, fantastic to be let into the head of an almost incidental murderer, fantastic to see life so clearly from his point of view that his deed can be almost forgiven, or at least forgotten. Oh yes, and terrifyingly utilitarian and wonderfully depressing.
