It has to be said that this is a very good collection of short stories, all of which I really enjoyed. Like all good short stories they each focus on a specific theme of human emotion, wrapped up in a good sci-fi 'idea'. Take the first in this collection 'With Morning Comes Mistfall', which incidently is probably my favourite. This is a short story of how man's pursuit of knowledge can cause the loss of wonder and romance, set on a beautiful alien planet. The title novella, the largest here, explores the themes of love and religion combined with a symbiosis remeniscent of 'Hothouse'. Other stories look at issues of morality, lonleness and even, in the case of 'Run to Starlight' corruption in sports for the greater good.
I almost think some of these could be much expanded even to the extent of forming a whole novel, but that is the wonderful thing about short stories. They always leave me thinking and there is no filler or unnecessary exposition.
