(This review was also posted on my blog, Melissa's Midnight Musings http://midnight-orchids.blogspot.com/...)
I recently reviewed one of White's other books, My Fairytale Life, and wasn't too pleased with it.
White sent me When Destiny Knocks before I'd even read or reviewed my Fairytale Life. After reading My Fairytale Life, I was really hesitant to even read When Destiny Knocks because I was afraid of not liking it. But, I pushed that aside because I really wanted to give her another chance. I had hoped that maybe the issues that I had with the previous book would be smoothed out with this book.
Unfortunately, I was wrong.
The main issue with the story is the editing. Or, in my opinion, the lack thereof. There were errors present in my Fairytale Life as well, but I think there were even more errors here. From the first page I found myself editing the book both in my head and making notes within my Kindle application. And I'm not talking a word or two every ten pages, but a word, phrase, or tense change multiple times on some pages. The characters often switched back and forth between tenses in the same sentence! Also, there were multiple characters dialogue in the same paragraph. As far as I know, when a new character starts speaking, a new paragraph should be started. It's not a good sign when you have to edit as you read. A reader wants to get lost in the story, not edit it.
The lack of editing may be the result of White's fast paced publication schedule. When Destiny Knocks was published Dec 24, 2011. My Fairytale Life w as published 5 weeks later on January 30 2012. The next book in the Destiny series, When Destiny Strikes was published earlier this month. And the author has yet another book scheduled for publication in June 2012. This author seems to be too focused on publication and not focused enough on the quality of their work.
I understand that stories come quickly. And I know that it must be really exciting to say that you published another book. But, just because you want to publish a book doesn't mean that you should let the quality of your work suffer.
The pacing of this novel is fast. Though, I was pleased to see that this time the story takes place over the course of a few months rather than a few weeks, like My Fairytale life. That is one positive that I noted.
The characters, though, are lacking. There's not enough background information for me to become involved with them, or invested in their journey. Especially with Karlie. She's the chosen one. Of course, as a reader, I want to know why? I want to know what makes her so special. I understand that White is trying to keep the suspense up for the readers, but if you don't give us something, we're going to lose interest. The characters all keep telling Karlie that she's special, but that it isn't safe to tell her why or what her powers are. Well why not? Why isn't there more interaction about this between the supporting characters? I think if the supporting characters played a bigger role, the story could have been shaped and paced a lot better
When we do eventually find out what Karlie's powers are, there isn't much explanation to them. They're just stated briefly, without detail, and it's on to the next event in the story. I want details! I want to be able to imagine myself inside the story, to be awed at the scope of her importance, and her powers. and I wasn't able to do that here.
There's another love triangle in this story, so those who like them will be happy. This time I was at least happy to see that the love triangle characters weren't a vampire and a werewolf. This time they were an angel and a demon. That is slightly less cliche.
I will say that White does a decent job of ending her books on cliffhangers. Sadly, my slight interest in the next book isn't because I want to see what happens to the characters so much as I want to see just how far off track the author will take the story next.
Suffice it to say it's highly likely that I will not be reading any more books by this author.
You never know, you may end up really enjoying this book. I'd recommend this to anyone who likes a quick read, or who likes love triangles.

hmmm...rather interesting that someone can be deemed crazy for disliking a book...does that mean someone can be deemed unintelligent for not just liking, but actually loving a series of poorly written books? just a random thought...
Why does everybody keep comparing books to Twilight? Is nobody else allowed to write about vampires and werewolves besides Stephenie Meyer? It seems this whole review is you hating Heather White, and finally about 2 lines from the end, you actually address the book (which, by the way, I had NO editing issues with it).
Obviously - this book wasn't for you. But, I think you could have said it in a nicer way.

I think that any time you read there's always a part of you that compares what you're currently reading to something else you've read. Of course anyone is allowed to write about anything they want, but I just felt that the werewolf vampire love triangle was too predictable and didn't work well in this case.
I agree, looking back on it now, I could have expressed my opinions in a nicer way, but in doing that I may have been less honest. Either way, what's done is done.
Melissa - you should really read this blog post: http://supagurlbooks.blogspot.com/201... ... and read the comments people have posted on it.Kayla - I don't think Emily literally meant Melissa was "crazy"... I'm sure she meant it in a nice, playful way.

Sharpay-Thanks for bringing that to my attention
Melissa, I agree with your review 110%. I also think your review is well thought out and polite. There are so many GR reviewers who are so rude and over the top in bashing a book, but you were very to the point, honest and polite about it. Not rude or 'mean' at all.
I actually was noting down all the errors too, and even took screen shots when there were a ton on one page. It was crazy.

Thank you very much for your comments on my review. I'm glad I'm not the only one who found these errors. :)
Wow, the author calls a reviewer a douche on another review and she is now here too thanking commenters for harassing the reviewer? I can assure you I will never read a DAMN thing this author writes. EVER.
If you wish to write books for yourselves then do not publish them. if they are for you YOU, why make them public?
Calling a reader a douche? I don't think you can even BEGIN to school me on what is or ISN'T classy. Grow the eff up. And I'm calling bullshit on you writing them for you. Every author wants their books read by other people. You wouldn't publish them if you didn't. Keep them in a drawer then. Yeah, that's what I thought.
Heather wrote: "I don't care if you or anybody else reads my books. I wrote them for ME. Not for you. Not for "fame" or "glory". I wrote them for FUN. And you wouldn't know the first thing about being classy."
Just like you have no clue on how to be a professional.

hahahaha. yes!
Heather wrote: "I am not trying to be professional."you made that clear a long time ago. no worries on that part.
I am glad to see that someone who calls themself a "writer" does not even have a wide enough vocabulary to express themself properly and needs to resort to name calling. I see you have a DNF on your book list Heather, did that writer call you a name, probably not, and that is classy!
wow, I really can't believe all that I'm reading. I first read Andrea's review (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...) and now this? Melissa, I thought this review was professional and very helpful. You never attacked the author on a personal level, you gave your honest opinion and even dealt with harassment by acknowledging your faults (which I disagree there were any), AND you didn't even outright tell readers NOT to read her book. Your review was great.
I have read books with poor editing and is SO distracting as a reader. A story can be great, but it needs good editing to be a novel. Otherwise, it doesn't belong in print, at least not yet. It is so important that an author spends quality time with his or her book. Once she puts her name on it, it reflects who she is as a writer and as a professional.
Lastly, as I said to Andrea, readers are an authors best tool. We readers, we're all they've got. Without us they wouldn't even be in business. My best advice to Heather is this: Listen.
Zooey wrote: "wow, I really can't believe all that I'm reading. I first read Andrea's review (http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...) a..."Thank you Zooey I really appreciate your comments about my review. And I agree with your thoughts that poor editing is very distracting, it really does take away from the reading experience. Also, your advice of listening is very sound.
Okay first of all: Melissa, I do not blame you at ALL for not liking a book because of errors. I rated a book one star because of that and to be honest, it can be hard to get into sometimes. You were fairly polite and just about it and all you're saying is you didn't enjoy it because of that and honestly, I wouldn't care about a mistake once in a while, but as an author, they should try to edit their books or do a quick proofread before publishing it. And Heather: think about it. Bloggers and reviewers are people too. We cry and get emotional just like you. You didn't like Melissa's review, and she didn't really like your book too much. You could just accept that you'll receive a few bad reviews in your writing career, graciously thank that reviewer for an honest review, no matter how much you hated that she didn't like it. I know you want to stand up for yourself and defend your book, but you don't need to start calling names. Honestly, there is no right way to stand up to your books when you get a negative review because a) not everybody will like your book and you can't force them and b) think of all those famous singers out there. Obviously, not everybody is head-over-heels for Katy Perry but you don't see HER or anybody else slashing into somebody when they say something negative about her latest single.
Eileen wrote: "Okay first of all: Melissa, I do not blame you at ALL for not liking a book because of errors. You make a very good point about how others who put their work out in the public eye don't go around making hurtful comments when someone doesn't like their work.
Eileen wrote: "Obviously, not everybody is head-over-heels for Katy Perry but you don't see HER or anybody else slashing into somebody when they say something negative about her latest single. "This needs a standing ovation. If Robert Downey Jr. attacked everyone who hated his performance, he wouldn't have time to act. So authors who attack reviews really have way too much time on their hands.
Giselle wrote: "Hey hey now! Don't go bringing RDJ into this! He rocks my world! (Or at least in my head he does!)"He's so awesome it makes me cry.
Stacia Kane wrote a wonderful blog post about this whole reader/author issue we seem to be having as of late. I'm sorry that I don't have the link at the ready to share right now but if you go to her author page I'm sure you can find it. The basic point of the post is that readers have the right to say pretty much whatever the hell they want about a book because it is their opinion. If they hate the cover they can say that. If they want to write a whole review about how they were annoyed by the author's use of one word - they can do that. They have no restrictions about what their opinions or reviews must or must not include. Some readers will love this book while others will hate it and others fall somewhere in between. Welcome to life. You have the right to have your feelings hurt over negative reviews. I'm sure it sucks bigtime to see negative words written about something you poured your effort and creativity into, but when you call the reviewers who don't like your books names it paints you in an extremely poor light and makes you look bad. And unlike us readers, you actually are a professional who has a public reputation to be mindful of.
I think Courtney Summers summed it up best when asked what she wants readers to get out of her book This is Not a Test. 'Whatever they want! Once a book is out there, it belongs to the reader. I just hope they felt the time they spent with it was worth it.'
There was nothing wrong with your review. It's getting pretty bad when authors start insulting readers. What a great way to insure other readers won't read your work.
Melissa wrote: "Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but calling me "crazy" is a little unnecessary."you are definitely NOT crazy... I agree that editing is very important and we should not have to be reading work that is not up to par.
This is an excellent review, Melissa! I read it twice, pretty carefully, and I didn't see anything but careful, honest criticism of a book that you didn't care for. This is exactly the kind of review I look for to help me get a clear impression of a book. I read Andrea's review as well, and got exactly the same impression. Two really well written, honest reviews.
I also read a few 5-star reviews of this book. They were certainly enthusiastic, but I learned nothing at all about the book from them.
The author's comments are gone. I read about that, and got the picture from elsewhere. Don't need to see more.
All I can say is, write it the way you see it! You did a fine job here.

Thanks very much Jim!
To be honest, at one point, very briefly I thought about taking down all of the comments on the post here and on my blog, because it looks silly, with their being mostly only one side of the story since the author's comments are gone, plus I didn't want the negativity on my blog.
But the more I think about it the more I'm realize I'm just going to leave them up there. I'd rather people see it than not. I didn't say anything negative and have nothing to hide, plus all of the other comments that are on the review bring up a lot of good points. Plus, I said I wouldn't alter my review to spare anyone's feelings, so I shouldn't alter the comments either.
You are very welcome, Melissa!I agree with all your points about leaving the comments up. Your review was perfectly reasonable in all respects, and the comments make a lot of good points as you said.
If you wish, you could add an 'edit' paragraph at the bottom of your review, just explaining that the author made comments and subsequently deleted them. That way, members can avoid some confusion about the 'missing' portions of the thread. Another possiblity is to add a comment to the thread with the same information. Or edit one of your earlier comments - maybe one near where the author originally commented - with a label and date to show that you are providing this information for clarity. No need for any value judgments.
Those are just ideas - of course it is entirely up to you to decide. I like it just the way it is! And I certainly wouldn't take any of it down, if I were in your position.
