(5.0) History of crypto, from its very beginning to public key cryptography and a sketch of quantum cryptography. Very well written and researched, balancing accuracy, ease-of-reading and entertainment. One of the best non-fiction read recently!

Otis Chandler Understandable for a non phd?

Brian Yes, though i did audit a crypto class at Stanford which gave me a head start. But it was very far from my field of expertise. Further evidence: the crypto guy was the one who gave me my lowest quals score (don't worry, I still passed just fine). ;)
