it was ok
bookshelves: fantasy

I'm glad I read this book because I LOVED Voices and Powers (#2 and #3, respectively, of the Annals of the Western Shore). But Gifts itself left me rather cold. The world it is set in is so harsh and cruel and there are precious few characters to relate to. Even Orrec and Gry, the sympathetic characters, were hard to connect to. The one big reveal of the story was interesting, but other than that, I felt like the story didn't really go much of anywhere. Voices provides a more satisfying conclusion to Orrec and Gry's story.
