In the sequel to Snyder's Poison Study, Yelena takes up her place at the magic school in Sitia. Reunited with her family Yelena discovers that while her parents are overjoyed to have her back, her brother prefers to think of her as an Ixian spy. Leaf may hate her, but Yelena is still forced to work with him when young girls start turning up dead, tortured horribly and their souls stolen. The two, along with the master magicians, and some help from Yelena's Ixian friends, help solve the gruesome murders and stop a killer.

As fast paced, well written and developed as the first book, this did not disappoint. I tore through and hung on every word, eager to discover what would happen next. While Yelena still has undeniable Mary Sue tendencies, she's still a fun character and one that I enjoy. Snyder does an excellent job of showing that there are no easy decisions and creating sympathy for the many diverse sides in the various conflicts throughout.
