Really? This is a book about porn and not much else. I guess that alone doesn't make it bad, so let's start with first bone: Dear English Majors, please create a main (female) character who isn't also an English Major. I know it is hard to believe, but a few women do major in other field and I, for one, would like to read about them too. I know you are supposed to "write what you know", but seriously, you only know other English Majors?

Okay, personal gripe done. Next, I admit that I am not the most sophisticated literary critic (after all I'm not an English Major, right?), what I like is a good story, that I learn a little something from that I can take with me, and that in the end adds something to my life. While it is true I learned an awfully lot about the world of bondage-submission and dominant-subordinate sexual lifestyle, this just didn't add much to my life. I'm not really an avid romance novel or mystery reader either--unless there is something historically significant to them. So, perhaps I'm not a fair judge.

All this said, I read this book quickly and wanted to find out what happened to the characters in the end. Of course, this being a trilogy, the end wasn't really the end. For 250 pages I thought there was no way I'd read the sequels, but for the last 10 pages or so, I changed my mind. I'll have to see. In the meantime, I'm starting, "Think, Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World" by Lisa Bloom--just to bring a few brain cells back to life.

Jennifer Wow--you're the first person I know who's read this book! It's funny--two op-eds in Sunday's New York Times referenced it--one by Maureen Dowd and one by Frank Bruni.

Jill I have to see what Maureen Dowd had to say about it!
