** spoiler alert ** 3.5 stars

I wanted to like this book more. I DO think that stylistically it's down to earth, the dialogue is easily digested and most importantly, believable. Been reading a lot of stuff lately where I have trouble buying that anyone would say half of the stuff they do. The dialogue in this book seemed more sincere. I also thought some of the scenarios that could occur in the end times were plausible, the RMUs, the Grails, but thought government subsidized contract killing a little much.

I might not have read this book if not for Christopher Priest's rant on the Arthur C. Clarke Award short list I read about here

I decided after reading the article that I would learn a little about the list and some of Priest's "suggested alternate nominees". So I picked Magary and I'm not at all sorry that I did. I'm not EXTREMELY into SF, that is into it enough to say that the arc and immortality tropes are old hat, so I sort of enjoyed it.
