Once again, Murakami weaves his impressionistic spell on us with his latest. The story follows a woman named Aomame who is transported to an alternate 1984. It's hard to describe the story since Murakami chooses to spend most of his time describing thoughts, feelings and inner monologues over actual plot.

The first two thirds of the book is captivating and compelling, giving just enough plot and internal thoughts but the last third seems to find the story spinning its wheels in place with the main conflict deflating before the story ends, making the book feel a bit anti-climactic. It's a bit disappointing after having followed these characters for over 900 pages.

Overall, a good read. Not quite top shelf Murakami but still rewarding if you're willing to surrender to its quirky, loopy premise.
