I love learning history from fiction and this was a really good one. James is the wedding officer, a British soldier sent to Naples as the Allied Forces begin the Liberation of Italy in 1944. His job is, among other things, to interview Italian women who have petitioned to marry solidiers, to determine that they are "worthy" (i.e. not prostitutes) He falls in love with Livia, the cook, and learns all kinds of things, including how to cook and how not to be so stuffy. One also learns about an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius which really happened, the battle of Anzio, how to make mozzarella. Very enjoyable.
