Jeff Smith spent 13 years creating and self-publishing this epic comic-book series. It's a blend of high fantasy and the innocent, juvenile sort of stuff--with, nonetheless, a tremendously wide appeal--that one finds in Peanuts, Carl Barks’s Scrooge McDuck comics, or the Moomin books. Smith’s art is wonderful, but the real surprise is how skillfully, from the very first pages, he writes vivid characters. The Bone stories are good, clean, intelligent fun, and as such they’re just the sort of thing the graphic novel format needs to continue producing as it evolves.
