This book is pretty much what you would expect from Tamora Pierce, that is to say, I liked it. Entertaining storyline, great new characters, even if the plot was somewhat predictable toward the end. The truth is, I'm amazed over and over again, how Pierce can take such horrible people/places/catastrophes and make them seem not-quite-so-bad-as-they-could-be. Like there is quite a bit of violence in these books, but its not the horrible blood-guts-and-gore violence you see in so many other books. Also, the allusions to the horrors of child-slavery are quite sufficient without Pierce having to actually lay it all out like you see in so many books. Thus, the need for the Dogs and their violence is justified without actually taking away from the focus of the story with grisly details. All in all, a good read. I'll definitely be reading the third book.
