Total sleeper as far as I'm concerned, but a great book. No one I ever talk to has read it. My mother was given it as a gift and passed it along to me. I almost put it down in the first 30 pages, but am thrilled I kept reading. It's the story of a brother and sister in post WWII Japan who are European and are befriended by an American who is stationed there immediately after the war. The setting is desolate and hopeless and guiltridden, the parents impossibly awful. The soldier is torn about his feelinigs for the quite young sister, and the siblings share this incredibly tight bond ove books, which are their escape, but become their reality because of the brothers physical impediments. Wonderfully written, romantic, sad, happy. Great book.
