Promise the Night tells the fascinating story of the early years of Beryl Clutterbuck, who became Beryl Markham, one of the most famous aviators of the 1930's. Beryl grew up with her father in a very wild part of East Africa and left largely on her own, Beryl bonded intensely with the land and the people and threw off conventions of proper society of the time. She was a risk taker and a seeker of adventure, which often got her into trouble as a child, but served her well in her flying career. Author MacColl captures Beryl's spirit and the grand spirit of the place and time with wonderful description and dialogue. Any young woman can imagine just what it would be like to be Beryl on her father's farm and they will be longing to do just that.
