Oh dear.
And you thought modern-day bodice rippers were dead? I shamefully admit that I fell into all the hype this novel has generated. It certainly lived down to expectations. Amateurishly written with heavy-breathing bondage-style sex scenes taking up at least half the novel, "50 Shades" is a overly long two-character romance about a virginal college coed and Christian Grey, a billionaire CEO who just happens to be drop-dead gorgeous. You know this about Christian because the author takes pains to remind us about his looks in what seems to be every fourth sentence. Never have I read a book that was in such clear need of an editor. James uses the phrase "I flush" at least once on every page and repetition of the sex scenes does the unthinkable here: it makes sex boring. There are two more sequels already published to this tripe...and I can't wait to read them. Mainstream erotica as badly written as this doesn't come along every day! In the meantime, I'm cleansing the palate with Anne Tyler's new novel, "The Beginners Goodbye".
