This was the first book I read in the Private series, which I'd previously avoided, figuring it would be just another stupid boarding school series. And indeed yes -- the boarding school milieu, marveling at the beautiful buildings and old-school New England ambiance, the cable-knit cashmere sweaters and the perfectly-worn-in designer jeans -- are getting to be beyond cliche.

That aside though, the fast-paced plot of these books makes them very different from some of their boarding school peers. There's competition, cattiness, confrontation -- and yes, the occasional murder. But rather than upping the cheese factor and taking things in a Christopher Pike-direction, the thriller/mystery aspect really adds to this series' appeal. Book five begins a new plot arc (where based on the cover models, the characters have grown inexplicably younger) that promises to be as exciting as the one covered in the first four books of the series.
