The fascinating story of the election and assassination of James Garfield, with details about his psychotic killer, the life of his contemporary Alexander Graham Bell and his role in Garfield's treatment, and the REAL cause of his death, the failure of American doctors to adopt Joseph Lister's practice of antiseptic surgery. Garfield was a very interesting man--born into poverty and rising to become a Civil War hero and scholar, he was essentially handed the Presidency without any intent to run and without any campaigning. His death after just a few months in office must have been a huge blow to the American people. Millard wrote another of my favorite books, River of Doubt, and this book, her second, is just as good as the first.
