After putting aside the book, I've started the audiobook. It's quite well done and I especially like the pronunciation of Chinese words. I do wonder about the mother. She is so... awful and I hope she isn't interpreted as a typical Chinese mother. She clearly has mental problems, brought on perhaps by losing her father, who abandoned his family to run off with another woman and then losing her husband in the same way. Her bitterness is hard to take, especially when her daughter Fei-ling is such a hard worker. it is heartening to see Fei-Ling become more sure of herself even though she has go behind her mother's back.
