I really enjoyed this book. I hadn't read anything by Bobbie Ann Mason in quite a while. On Marshall's last flight to Europe as a pilot, he visits the place in Belgium where he crash landed a bomber that had been attacked by Nazi fighter jets. He meets some people who were there and remembers the events that led up to this bombing raid and his escape to France where he was hidden by Resistance members and then led over the Pyrenees to Spain where he caught a boat back to England. There was a whole network of French Resistance members whose job was to hide American pilots and get them back to England.

Upon his forced retirement at age 60, he moves to Paris where he begins to track down people who helped him.

Lots of research went into this book which is based upon her father-in-law's experience of being shot down over France in WWII.
