Hawksong was a little different than the average shapeshifter story. Danica Shardae is an avian shapeshifter, who is soon to take her mothers place as the Tuuli Thea. (kind of like their Queen) Her kind has been at war for hundreds of years with the serpeintes. No on really knows why they are fighting, but with so many loved ones lost they simply continue to avenge their dead. Zane Cobriana is the Diente of the serpeintes. (king of the snakes) He has lost his father, three brothers and a sister to the war and wants to do whatever possible to end it. He proposes that the leaders of the two groups meet on neutral territory to discuss peace. They meet in the Mistari lands, and their queen suggests that Danica & Zane marry one another, and unite their people. Danica's mother is appalled, and immediately leaves taking Danica and any hope at peace with her. Zane isn't easily dissuaded and seeks out Danica to continue the discussion. With no other way to end the war, she agrees to marry him and unite their people.
