In a dystopian Chicago, 16-year-old Beatrice "Trice" has always felt different from the rest of her family. She was raced in the Abnegation faction, where she was trained to be selfless. There are five different factions in the city: Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), Dauntless (the Brave), and Abnegation (the selfless). Despite her upbringing, selfless has never come naturally to her. She s conflicted by her feelings of loneliness.

Beatrice takes an required aptitude test and knows that she is DIVERGENT. This means that she is not suited for just one faction, as it is supposed to be. In her case, she is suited for three: Dauntless, Abnegation, and Erudite. She is told that never share this information with anyone. During the Choosing Ceremony where she has to decide whose faction she'll be joining, Beatrice and her brother Caleb chose rival factions. After her arrival in Dauntless, she begins a challenging physical fighting training for her initiation into the Dauntless faction, makes three friends,(Christina, a Candor girl; Will, an studious Erudite boy, and Al, a Candor boy). She also develops a crush with one of her instructors named Four.

Tris must determine who her friends really are and where her romance with Four fits into her new life. As she discovers and uncovers conflicts between factions that threatens her new society, she must determines who will she be helping or betrayal. She also needs to face her own decisions.
