Why can't a fantasy sit on its own? Why must Arthur's mythology be the only definition of a fantasy?

I don't understand the main character. So swiftly the girl goes from losing her sister to being adopted by her teacher. Felt I missed layers of adaptation to the new situation. I'm still not sure I like her. She seems unable to tell the truth and gets upset when others around her are equally dishonest or not forthright. Had to look up Nixie on the internet as it wasn't explained enough in the book. That seemed to be true of the other beings.

But the book held my interest enough to finish and start the next book in the series.
