Vonnegut's later work (and I would say that he deteriorated by Breakfast of Champions and that Slaughterhouse 5 is not a good effort) is extremely hit or miss, but for every terrible book like Slapstick, there is a gem like Jailbird to make up for it. It still isn't written up to the fine level of his first two novels (which are his real masterpieces), but it doesn't sink to the simplicity and graphics that mar so many of his books. It stands alongside books like Cat's Cradle and God Bless you Mr. Rosewater as near masterpieces written in his simpler style.
