Johnson's ambitious tale is set in contemporary North Korea and told from three perspectives: the many incarnations of the character Jun Do; a nameless government interrogator and via government propaganda broadcasts. It's an unfathomable existence for anyone from a free society but one where the human spirit sometimes prevails despite an inhuman regime.
