After having grown up on the movie, I've at last willed myself to read the book. I can't say that I enjoyed it wholly and without reservations, but neither can I say that I hated it. Mitchell's powers of description drew me into the world she was depicting and her powers of storytelling made me invest in the characters, despite their overwhelming flaws. That says a great deal for the writing itself. But the whole worldview represented by the characters, even Melanie, is so Godless as to be burdensome. For that reason I will not be constantly pulling it off the shelf to reread.
