Stunningly realized. A floating pirate city, a central character you can't really love but empathize with anyway, intrigues worked out in thrilling complexity, and a rich cast of complex and believable characters. Perhaps best of all is that Mieville does an amazing job of knowing which stories NOT to tell. There are references to multiple background events that are never fully explained, but are hinted at in the perfect way to add psychological depth to the characters. This is a novel in large part about not-knowing seen primarily through the eyes of a character who is desperately attached to the idea of self-control.

Eli Brooke Miéville's breadth and depth of imagination, facility with language, and psychological insight never fail to amaze me. This is definitely one of his best.
