"One Wolf Howls" is an excellent story for many reasons including illustrations and theme. This is a realistic fiction book for primary readers but, it can be enjoyed by all ages because of the wonderful, poetic words. The Nautilus Book Award for Children’s Illustrated was given to this book in 2010. The story explains what wolves do throughout the year in their habitat. It explores each month and realistically depicts the weather elements. Also, another wolf is added to each page so that the number of wolves corresponds to the number of the month. I used this book at daycare for "w week" and got so much more out of it! The children loved the story, especially because of the beautiful baby wolves and watching them grow. They also loved the constant rhyme and repetition. I was able to review the months of the year and counting as we read the story. We also discussed the weather elements throughout the year. I will probably read this story every day during "w week."
