really liked it
Read from March 30 to April 23, 2012

This was the first time I've read Murakami and I will definitely be checking out his other work.
Why I would definitely recommend it: I thought the characters were refreshingly unique and genuine. At the same time the interesting counterpoint to the realism of the characters were the fantasy elements of the world they were living in. I also loved how the multiple story-lines blended together so seamlessly.
Why it isn't a 5/5: Perhaps I have read to many fantasy novels or am cursed with an American "gimme now" mentality but I have to admit that I struggled through the first half of the book. I wanted more information about the fantasy elements of the story and they were slow to be revealed, leaving me frustrated. Once I finally let go of that (again, about halfway through) and just read the story I was able to truly appreciate the writing style and the storyline.
Now that I have a feel for his pacing and phrasing I am curious to see if I will appreciate his other works more.
