I had a lot of problems with this book but one of the biggest was that I did not feel connected to the story at all while reading it. None of the characters felt real and it seemed like they were going through the motions as they tackled the big problems of the story. Which is understandable in some ways since those big problems make little sense. I honestly wasn't invested in anyone at all, partially because I didn't know how the book wanted me to feel about what was happening. Occasionally Mason would offer his dry, minimalist commentary but that was about the extent of it.

The characters were weak and the story seemed like nothing more than a crudely constructed vehicle to spread the word on overpopulation and food shortages. Probably the worst thing though is that the set up you get from the book flap doesn't even really show up until nearly the end and is dissatisfying to boot. It should have been horrific but it came off as dry and overdue.
