Not terrible--the book is nimbly structured, and it moves at a nice clip--but this is utterly unsurprising, hyper-southern fare (an evil snake-handling pastor, a mute victim, a good-hearted sheriff with a tragic past). And the prose is wooden. But there's enough here to make one hope for better down the line from Cash, if he can get past the cliches.
