Dan Chaon is a great writer, but this collection is a bit disappointing. The stories are all well written, and are loosely hooked together by a focus on ghostly themes. Each story is, in a way, playing with the idea that the lines between life and death may not be so hard and fast. This is sometimes interesting, but as the book progresses, it becomes mostly frustrating. It is very difficult to bond with a page bound character who is living as if they are dead, or vice versa. The characters are not as well realized as in any other body of Chaon's work, and the stand out stories are few and far between. The majority of the pieces in this collection are underwhelming, and leave the reader with a lingering feeling of -- huh?
