I was surprisingly moved by this psychological horror book, despite it having the trappings of a fairy tale in modern life story. Though the progression of the story -- character undergoes three separate experiences to evolve as a person -- has been done in countless ways, I really did enjoy how the POV of the protagonist becomes more and more unhinged as the tale unfolds. By the end, I was even teary/sad (it helped that the main conflict is really about coming to grips with the death of a parent, something which echoed my own life) and found my own sense of relief. Highly recommended, but maybe not for everyone. This is decidedly not escapist fantasy.
