I finished the first tome of Murakami's novel and felt...unsettled. The story gets under your skin quickly and certain passages read like the set-up to a horror novel that is extremely disconcerting. The prose is neither boring nor is it a fast-paced page turner. The writing sometimes meanders and that's why I couldn't say "it was amazing!" with five stars. It's a wonderfully crafted piece of literature, though, and I look forward to the second book. I can easily see why this first installment got people so excited and garnered so much praise. The settings are engrossing and the characters quite interesting, especially the female protagonist. One thing I worry about is if there is really enough to this story to write 1,000 pages more. I guess I'll see in the next volume!
