really liked it
bookshelves: 2012

I read this because the film was due out (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – a much more interesting name for a movie than the book’s original title). I liked it somewhat. In some ways it reads like a Maeve Binchy but with more depth. I felt there were too many characters and though they were often interesting, I didn’t care enough about them for the book to be a really strong favourite for me. From a quick review of the IMDB listing, it seems as if the movie has cut some characters out or perhaps merged some together, which would make for a tighter plot in a 2 hour movie slot. I suspect the film has sweetened some of the characters. I don’t think I’ll see the film – not sure I could handle Maggie Smith in the role of working class Cockney Muriel. From Downton Abbey to Eastenders? Can’t see it myself.
